INTERVIEW SERIES: Looking back on 10 years of hESC lines
Published on 06/11/08 00:00
In the past several months we have been presenting a series of interviews with some of the premiere scientists in the field – James Thomson, Alan Trounson, Rudolf Jaenisch, Christine Mummery, Peter Andrews, Martin Pera, and Ariff Bongso and look back on the last 10 years of hESC research.
Ten years ago this November, a paper published from Dr. James Thomson’s lab, reporting on the first derivation of hESC lines from human blastocysts (Science 1998, 282:1145-7), led to an explosion in the field of stem cell research. Suddenly, everyone was interested in stem cells, both for their value in basic scientific research, and for their enticing potential as a therapeutic tool. Scientists were joined in their excitement over this new discovery by the media and the public, both of whom showed a vivid and almost unparalleled fascination with this new finding, and its potential for basic research, drug development and regenerative medicine.
This 10th anniversary of the derivation of hESC lines presents a wonderful opportunity to look back over the past 10 years in the field, as well as to look forward to what the future may hold. Over the past several months we presented a series of interviews with some of the premiere scientists in the field – James Thomson, Alan Trounson, Rudolf Jaenisch, Christine Mummery, Peter Andrews, Martin Pera, and Ariff Bongso. We discuss their work with stem cells, their lives, their achievements, their advice for young scientists, and their thoughts about the future of the field. On the Stem Cells Portal we also feature their laboratories and present further excerpts from their interviews. Please join us for this fascinating series!
